Disruption and distraction: on the road to ministry

Tonight I stumbled on some journaling I did last October after starting seminary.  I pondered then how it seemed that things sure got a lot more complicated, busy, and distracting merely by starting school.  It was more than just going back to school by itself, but complications seemed to come out of the woodwork and in my career to create some extra background noise.  Interesting that I noticed it then, as the background noise seems to have continued getting louder.

My secular career has provided many beautiful distractions since starting school, which I will have more to write about in a future entry.  All this had me thinking, do distractions and even great (but unrelated and distracting) opportunities inherently appear when you pursue God’s desire in your life?

Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.

– Matthew 10:34

Taking a little liberty with the context of Jesus’ words, he knew what he was doing.  He knew he was not on an easy mission.  Why should I expect following him to be easy?  Why should I expect the road to be free from distractions, and dotted with exit ramps that look like great ideas?  When the road gets tough, suddenly the road and career I’ve been on for so many years looks so comfortable.  Wouldn’t it be easier?

I’m sure it would, but what else would I miss out along the way?

Press on.
