Your (Digital) Identity

Digital Fingerprint: Riddle me this!

Once upon a time managing your image meant making sure you stood up straight, spoke clearly, and delivered a good handshake.

Today we are judged by so much more.  When we apply for a job, or just about anything else, we are subjected to a check on our background.  It is routine for employers to look at applicants’ Facebook and Twitter profiles.  This may seem like an invasion of privacy, but the truth of the matter is that what we put out there in the digital world says just as much as what we say to peoples’ faces.

I take that back.  It actually says more.

What we say on social media, in blogs, or any other public media forum often says more about us than what we say directly to others.  Often times the “filter” is turned off.  We write as if we are writing to one person in particular, not considering the multitudes of others who may also end up reading.

So … are you better off saying nothing?

I vote: no.  If we choose not to participate, then what others say about us in the digital world may become what our digital identity is based on.  Or, the complete lack of presence in the digital community may be seen as ignorance, fear, or deception.

Do we let others determine what our digital identity is?  … or do we boldly go forward to proclaim who we are?

If you are a Christian, what will your digital identity look like?

They will know we are Christians by our love …
